Duration: 6 Hrs

If you want to learn how to make your own clothes, then this is where you should begin your journey. Successful garment sewing starts with understanding how to use your sewing machine and the accessories that come with it. You will be making a sampler in muslin fabric to keep as a reference for the sewing techniques that you will learn in class. We will end the class with a discussion on sewing patterns, how to choose your correct size, fabric, and notions, so that you will be ready to make your first garment. You can join this class as an absolute beginner or as a refresher if you’ve sewn in the past. If you have any questions about the class, please email Catherine@sewright.com.

What you will learn:

  • Revisit how accurate threading impacts performance and troubleshooting
  • Discuss needle function, selection, and safe replacement techniques.
  • Review different kinds of thread
  • Learn seam construction, seam finishing, basic hems and other sewing techniques used in garment sewing plus zipper applications
  • Learn how to take your body measurements

Materials needed:

  • Sewing machine in working order, foot pedal, power cord (or you can use one of our classroom machines) and the accessories that come with your machine including your machine manual
  • 1 spool of dark colored all purpose polyester thread
  • 1 - 9” invisible zipper
  • 1 - 10” regular nylon coil zipper
  • 1 yard of muslin fabric
